Awards will be considered for schemes within the Bradford Metropolitan District, which were designed or completed between 1 January 2005 and the 31 December 2009. Past award winners will not be eligible but previously commended schemes may be re-considered.
Within the award there will be a number of categories which will include new and refurbished buildings, large or small. In addition to Education, Public and Commercial buildings, the assessor will be keen to see good examples of Residential and Industrial buildings.
The assessors will be looking for any buildings which have been restored, extended and/or altered. This could include any work undertaken to restore or conserve fabric or involve the removal of unsightly features and their replacement with new work to match that
of the original buildings. It would also include any work designed to respect and enhance an historic building or group of historic
buildings.
The Design Awards cover not only buildings but schemes which improve the Public Realm. Any soft or hard landscaping scheme is
eligible, or any scheme that provides an improvement to the townscape including lighting and urban space, or natural environment. No scheme is too small. Shop fronts, murals, artwork etc. are all eligible for the Design Awards.
Assessment Panel
Each year a distinguished local figure will be invited to lead a panel of assessors. This panel is likely to comprise a representative from the sponsor, an eminent architect, a member of the local press, two representatives from Bradford Council (one from the Planning Service and one Councillor) and two members from the Bradford Branch of RIBA. Other disciplines covered by the awards (landscape design, conservation, development etc.) may also be co-opted onto the panel.
Assessment
This will be in two stages. In the first stage all nominated schemes will be assessed from photographs for completed schemes,
visuals/drawings (A3/A4 size) for designs and the description of the project. This description should highlight the best aspects of the scheme. A short list will then go to the second stage when all sites will be visited by the assessment panel.
In reaching their decision, assessors will consider the following criteria:
